- You can create simulations and demonstrations using Adobe Captivate.
- Simulations are usually interactive software simulations that allow the learner to click through and try the application being taught. Captivate allows you to set two simulation modes – training simulation and assessment simulation.
- Assessment simulations include Click Boxes (to make the lesson interactive) and Failure Captions (to help the user who clicks in the wrong place or performs the wrong step).
- Training simulations are similar to assessment simulations. However, in addition to Click Boxes and Failure Captions being automatically added, you will also gain Hint Captions—captions that appear if the learner gets close to the Click Box (hot spot) but does not actually click on the Click Box.
- Demonstrations follow more of a traditional teacher approach with the learner watching the module. This is ideal for situations where you don’t necessarily expect the learner to follow along and actually perform the steps being demonstrated. In Captivate, when you set the recording preferences to Demonstration mode, Text Captions, Highlight Boxes, and mouse movements are automatically added to your project.

Can you add the audio to a demonstration after recording the demo?
Yes, you can.
I have been dabbling with simulations here and there thinking it could really come in handy for future projects. My favorite part is the click boxes that allow the user to immediately apply the information within the project. I think that simulations are a great supplement to a training done using demonstration first. It is also a great way to hold “refresher courses” without having to bring a group back in to the room, which is often a challenge that we face at my current place of work.
